Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are typically presented in a natural trim — no clipping of the body coat, only tidying of the furnishings. Charlie's feathering had grown to an impractical length for a dog with outdoor access in Florida. Cavalier ear feathering mats in a characteristic pattern: thin rope tangles that form near the tips and work upward over time. Rosie's mats were at the tip stage — still separable with patience. We applied a detangling spray, let it penetrate, then worked each mat from the outside inward. The silky texture means aggressive combing breaks the hair rather than detangling it. Rosie's ears were fully cleared in 30 minutes of careful work. Owners should use a wide-tooth comb through ear feathering every three to four days; this one habit prevents most mat formation in Cavaliers.

Oliver's 60-minute visit covered the three most time-sensitive areas: ear feathering (combed and trimmed at tips), paw feathering (trimmed so pads contact the floor cleanly — important for traction), and a moisturizing bath with blow-dry. Cavaliers can develop skin sensitivity, so we use a fragrance-reduced, conditioning shampoo. No clipping of the body coat was performed — Cavaliers in a natural presentation should not have the body coat touched between full grooms, only the furnishings maintained.
