Summer Dog Grooming Tips for Florida — Managing Heat and Humidity

How Florida's Summer Affects Dog Coat and Skin
Central Florida's summer environment creates specific coat and skin challenges:
Humidity accelerates mat formation. Long-coated and curly-coated dogs mat faster in summer because humid air causes coat fibers to swell and interlock. A Goldendoodle that can comfortably go six weeks without a full groom in March may mat in four weeks in July.
Heat causes coat growth acceleration. Dogs in Florida's perpetual warmth grow coat faster than in seasonal climates. This is the opposite of what many owners expect — summer does not create a grooming "break" in Florida.
Skin issues become more prevalent. Florida's heat and humidity create ideal conditions for skin infections, hot spots, and yeast overgrowth — particularly in skin folds (French Bulldogs, Boxers), around ears (all floppy-eared breeds), and in heavily coated areas with limited airflow.
Summer Coat Length Recommendations by Breed Type
Curly and wavy-coated breeds (Poodles, doodles, Bichons): A slightly shorter summer cut — one inch shorter than the standard maintenance length — dramatically reduces mat formation in July and August. The coat keeps the dog comfortable while the reduced length manages humidity-driven mat formation.
Double-coated breeds (Labs, Goldens, German Shepherds, Huskies, Corgis): Do NOT shave. The double coat functions as active heat management — the guard coat reflects sunlight and the undercoat provides insulation against both heat and cold. A shaved double coat grows back in incorrect texture and loses its thermal function. Professional de-shedding every five to six weeks in summer removes the accumulated undercoat that traps heat without removing the protective guard coat.
Short smooth coats (Beagles, Pit Bulls, Boxers, Dobermans): Monthly bathing during summer to remove accumulated skin oils that trap heat against the skin. No length adjustment needed — they're already at their minimum.
Long silky coats (Yorkies, Maltese, Cavaliers): Summer maintenance cut recommended — keep the body coat at two to three inches maximum to reduce heat and mat risk.
Summer Skin Health: What to Watch For
Florida summer creates peak season for several dog skin conditions:
Hot spots (moist dermatitis). Red, moist, rapidly spreading skin infections triggered by heat, moisture, and scratching. Signs: sudden appearance of a moist, hairless, irritated patch. Treatment: clip surrounding hair, clean with medicated solution, keep dry. Veterinary antibiotics often required.
Yeast skin infections. Common in folds (French Bulldogs, Bulldogs), ears (all floppy-eared breeds), and between toes. Signs: dark discoloration, musty odor, itching. Triggered by moisture accumulation. Regular fold cleaning and ear inspection prevents most cases.
Contact allergies. Increased outdoor exposure in summer means more contact with grass allergens, fire ants, and other environmental triggers. Signs: paw licking, belly redness, face rubbing. Regular bathing removes allergens from the coat before they can cause prolonged skin contact.
Any of these summer skin conditions should be reported to both your groomer and veterinarian.

Summer Grooming Schedule Adjustment
Most Orlando dog owners should shorten their grooming interval by one to two weeks during summer months (June–September):
- Goldendoodles and Bernedoodles: 4–5 weeks (from standard 5–6 weeks)
- Shih Tzus and Maltese: 4–5 weeks (from standard 5–6 weeks)
- Labs and Goldens: 5–6 weeks (from standard 6–8 weeks)
- Huskies: 4–5 weeks (from standard 6 weeks)
- French Bulldogs: 5–6 weeks (from standard 6–8 weeks) — for fold monitoring
These adjustments are preventive — they cost less annually than the de-matting and hot spot treatments that develop when summer grooming intervals are extended.
