How to Prepare for a Mobile Grooming Visit — A Practical Checklist

By Orlando Pet Grooming Co · Last updated: 2026-04-15

Parking and Access

Clear the van parking space. Mobile grooming vans need approximately 20 feet of clear curb or driveway space. If your driveway is blocked, let the groomer know in advance — a clean street parking space works equally well in most residential neighborhoods.

Water access. Most mobile grooming vans are self-contained with onboard water tanks. Some older-format vans may request access to an outdoor hose. Ask when booking if you're uncertain.

Power access. Professional mobile grooming vans run on onboard generators. No connection to your home power is needed.

Gate access. If the groomer needs to enter a gated driveway or community gate, provide the access code or plan to meet them at the entrance.

Preparing Your Dog

Exercise beforehand. A short walk 20 to 30 minutes before the appointment helps high-energy dogs settle into the grooming environment more quickly. An exhausted dog is often a cooperative grooming dog.

Recent bathroom break. Take your dog outside to relieve itself before the appointment. Most groomers can accommodate a bathroom break during longer appointments, but it's more efficient to start fresh.

Last meal timing. Avoid feeding a large meal immediately before the appointment. A light meal 2 to 3 hours before is ideal — some dogs experience motion sensitivity or anxiety-related nausea during grooming.

Brushing beforehand. If your dog has surface tangles, a quick home brush-through before the appointment reduces the time the groomer spends on preliminary detangling — potentially reducing your appointment cost if de-matting charges apply.

Information to Have Ready

The groomer may ask about:

  • Any health conditions your dog is currently being treated for
  • Medications — particularly any sedatives or anxiety medications taken before grooming
  • Skin or coat issues noticed recently (hot spots, dry patches, unusual shedding)
  • Behavioral notes — specific tools, areas, or handling approaches the dog reacts to
  • Preferred cut or style — if your dog has a specific look you want maintained, mention it with a reference photo if possible
  • Last grooming date and experience — if the dog hasn't been groomed in a long time, the groomer should know

Managing Other Pets During the Appointment

If you have multiple dogs, kennel or contain the other dogs during the appointment. Dogs that aren't being groomed often bark at the van or interfere during the handoff process. It's also safer to have only the dog being groomed accessible when the groomer arrives.

Cats typically ignore the grooming van entirely. No special precautions are needed for cats unless your dog gets over-stimulated by cat proximity during grooming preparation.
